Brighton Booch spotted an opportunity to stand out in the kombucha category with a bright, bold, and fun brand that would quickly capture shopper attention and become Brighton’s favourite drink. With a punchy flavour at the heart of their identity, they partnered with us to bring that energy to life through design. We delivered a visual identity system that included a vivid, street-inspired hedgehog mascot, eye-catching packaging and labels, and impactful touchpoints that helped the brand explode across social media and expand its stockist network.
The fermented beverage space is both cluttered and saturated with brands leaning into the “natural” aesthetic. Brighton Booch needed something that would leap off the shelf. The challenge: create a visual identity that felt bold, playful, irreverent, and distinctly street-inspired, without losing the handcrafted, local charm at the core of the brand. We needed a design system that could flex across packaging, social media, and merchandise, and help a small husband-and-wife team gain visibility while still being manageable for in-house execution.
We began by analysing competitors and market trends, identifying a clear gap for a kombucha brand that wasn’t just healthy but unapologetically bold, fun, and rooted in Brighton’s creative spirit. This discovery stage set the foundation for a visual-first approach that would bring the brand’s flavour and personality to life.
At the heart of the identity we created “Booch,” a spiky Sussex hedgehog whose wild eyes captured the energy of that first sip of kombucha. Booch became the brand’s mascot and was designed to adapt to each flavour, creating a rainbow of vibrant labels across the range. His character spilled into bottle-top motifs, graffiti-inspired patterns, and bold, expressive typography, giving Brighton Booch a distinctive street-inspired aesthetic that stood apart from competitors.
While Brighton Booch wanted to maintain control of their digital presence, we provided creative direction and visual assets to guide their tone and look online. This balance meant the husband-and-wife team could manage their social channels and digital touchpoints independently, while staying consistent with the bold, playful identity we had established.
Brighton Booch’s new identity had an immediate impact. Their spiky mascot, vibrant colour palette, and playful visuals helped the brand “explode” on social media, capturing attention and driving engagement. The bold design translated directly into more independent stockists across the UK, bringing Brighton’s favourite kombucha to new communities.
